Old Burying Ground | Stoneham, MA

This memorial honors more than 575 African, European, and Indigenous individuals who were once laid to rest without gravestones.

The rising sun casts symbolic light on their memory, while the arched inscription above calls every visitor to remember. The sun’s eyes—whose pupils follow viewers as they move side to side—create a quiet, watchful presence. The wavy lines evoke the ocean and nod to the Wabanaki people, also known as the “dawn land” people.

With more than 300 carved characters, the composition remains spacious and balanced, allowing the design to breathe.
